Blossoming.

So the new year got off to a cold start but we have had a few nice sunny days lately and I have often seen the bees flying from their hives.

With February we have the first flowers starting to come alive in our neck of the woods but don't be lulled into a false sense of security by the colours starting to bloom...remember the days are still cold and often wet so keep hefting those hives and checking your stores.

My bees so far seem to be doing well this winter. One of the hives is a little quieter than the other two but they have stores so I'm hoping they are just lazy. Having a discussion with my nephew about the hives and the fact that the one that wasn't flying so much was the one with the most stores inside he answered with,

'Well they are just lazy as they have lots of food so they will stay inside and get fat...this is how we get bumble bees!!'

I should at this point tell you that he was just trying to be funny...he is in fact 20...and supposedly intelligent!! It did make me chuckle though which is why I thought I'd share it with you!

Grantham District will once again be doing a course this year and we have quite a few already subscribed. It was with this course that I got started with beekeeping and I've never looked back so if you think beekeeping might be for you, or if you are just interested in learning a little more about these amazing creatures then don't hesitate to get in touch..we still have a few spaces left.
